Kneel Before Zod

General Zod for President in 2008

When I first came to your planet and demanded your homes, property and very lives, I didn’t know you were already doing so, willingly, with your own government. I can win no tribute from a bankrupted nation populated by feeble flag-waving plebians. In 2008 I shall restore your dignity and make you servants worthy of my rule. This new government shall become a tool of my oppression. Instead of hidden agendas and waffling policies, I offer you direct candor and brutal certainty. I only ask for your tribute, your lives, and your vote. – General Zod

Go, Gado, Go

Green Bay Packer running back Samkon Gado has a better off-season conditioning plan than most. He’s working in a local hospital as a step in his plans to become a doctor.

I went to the same college as Gado, and I know what a jump it was to go from backup fullback for the Liberty Flames to starting running back in the NFL. That kind of dedication will serve him well. :)

Minutemen vs. Socialists

Filed under: — Shane Thacker 4:10 pm

Ah, Greensboro, my hometown… :|

Seriously, if groups like the Minutemen think Greensboro, NC, is a good place to stop and garner support, we need to print up some kind of pamphlet about 1979 just so we can hand it to them. Not to put it lightly, but Greensboro is gunshy about controversial protests, for very good reason.

BTW, compliments to Joe Killian for working a Red Kryptonite reference into his story. :)

Network Neutrality

Filed under: — Shane Thacker 4:23 pm

Don’t want your ISP — or anyone who happens to run the pipes between you and the site you want to use — to be able to throttle back on your service because the site hasn’t paid them extra? Then take a few moments to think what you can do to support Network Neutrality.

A brief commercial break in life

Filed under: — Shane Thacker 4:01 pm

So, I’m sitting on the couch Saturday night, reading a bit after watching the first three rounds of the NFL Draft. Two hours later, I’m in the emergency room, trying to stay upright in an uncomfortable chair. Two hours after that, I’m lying in a hospital bed blissed out on morphine.

So, did something horrible happen? Not exactly, and that is the magic of the kidney stone. While they can be serious, kidney stones are often small, harmless, almost completely benign…and yet, when you have one, you want to bash yourself in the head with a steel chair so you can have other pain to distract you. :|

It’s only the second time I’ve had one, and this one was worse than the last. I’m hoping that pattern doesn’t hold true for any future afflictions, although I’ll have to admit a fourteen-year interval between them is not bad at all.

Anyway, moral of the story is, if you’re in enough pain to think about going to the emergency room, it’s not really worth toughing it out. Some things go better with an IV and hard drugs. :)

I also have to say, one of the great things about having someone to share your life with is that she drives you to the hospital, makes sure you get treatment, stays with you the entire time, and makes you feel better by just being there. Thanks, Lorrie.

Still in the running

I would like to point out at this time I am still in the running for head men’s basketball coach at NC State. With so many people withdrawing, I thought it my responsibility to let you know that there are some folks still willing to take the job.

It’s a program with a lot of promise. I don’t understand why everyone is pulling out of the job. I can see the Wolfpack competing evenly with the top teams in the state, maybe even under their next coach. ;)

Of course, if they hire me, the goals will have to be more modest. Perhaps we could compete evenly in Wake County.

Update: Sidney Lowe, huh? Well, if the Pack isn’t going to show any love for me, I can go on not showing love for them. :)
